Effutu's Beacon of Hope: Afenyo Markin names new library after kindness hero, Mr. R.C. Ekem

A state-of-the-art library and Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre has been officially commissioned in the Effutu Constituency, Central Region, in honor of Mr. R.C. Ekem, whose selfless act of kindness in 1995 profoundly impacted the life of Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu.

“Mr Ekem’s selfless act of kindness is a testament to the impact one person can have on someone’s life and the ripple effects it can create,” Mr Afenyo-Markin reflected during the commissioning ceremony.

The R.C. Ekem Library and ICT Centre, located in the Low Cost community, is equipped with modern technology, a comprehensive library, private reading rooms, a 100-seat ICT centre, and a 150-seat conference hall. The facility is designed to provide students and the wider Effutu community with opportunities for learning, research, and digital empowerment, bringing the total number of libraries in the constituency to nineteen.

Speaking at the event on Monday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Leader in Parliament, shared his personal story, emphasizing the transformative power of compassion.

“Sometimes the difference between a statistic and a statesman is a stranger who chose to care,” he said. “More than just a building, it’s a symbol of hope and opportunity, reminding us that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future. Your circumstances may be loud, but your dreams must be louder.”

The MP highlighted that the initiative forms part of his broader strategy to strengthen education and human capital development in Winneba. “The vision for this library is to be a hub where young minds can come together to learn, create, and innovate,” he added.

Mrs. Diana Anderson, Municipal Director of Education for Effutu, described the facility as a game-changer for the community. She noted that it would enhance digital literacy, foster innovation, and stimulate growth.

“This is not just a building; it’s a tool for transformation,” Mrs. Anderson said. “We will protect and maintain it so future generations can benefit from it. I urge learners, teachers, and the community to use the facility purposefully.”

Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose, Board Member of the Ghana Library Authority, speaking on behalf of CEO Ziblim Alhassan, described the commissioning as a milestone in community development. He praised Mr. Afenyo-Markin for his commitment to establishing nineteen libraries in the municipality and emphasized the importance of libraries in promoting literacy, numeracy, and digital readiness.

“The Ghana Library Authority’s appreciation for his selflessness and vision reflects his dedication to youth and community development,” Rev. Dr. Fayose said. He called on traditional leaders and the Municipal Chief Executive to support the sustainability of the library through collective effort.

Reverend Kofi Attah Mensah, Municipal Chief Executive for Effutu, concluded the ceremony with prayers for the centre’s enduring impact. “May this facility serve learners, teachers, and the community for many years to come. May it be a beacon of hope for a brighter future,” he said.

The R.C. Ekem Library and ICT Centre is expected to become a central hub for education, innovation, and community growth, continuing the legacy of one man’s act of kindness that changed a life and now promises to shape countless others.
