GCB Bank contract staff faces court for allegedly stealing GH¢490,400

A 29-year-old contract worker of GCB Bank, Samuel Owusu, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GH¢490,400 from customer accounts at the bank’s Abossey Okai branch.

Owusu, who worked as an electronic collector, was charged with stealing and has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Inspector Priscilla Avorgah told the court that the complainant is the Manager of Security and Fraud Investigation at GCB Bank Plc.

She explained that Owusu’s job involved collecting money from customers and depositing it into their respective accounts using a bank-issued mobile device.

According to the prosecution, a preliminary audit conducted on October 29, 2025, uncovered discrepancies indicating that GH¢490,400 had been siphoned from several customer accounts.

Inspector Avorgah said that when the matter came to light, the complainant, together with Owusu’s branch manager and supervisor, confronted him. During the meeting, Owusu reportedly admitted to taking the money between February and October 2025.

He allegedly told investigators that he used the funds to invest in an online trading platform known as “qadatralife.com”, believing he could earn profits and later refund the money.

Owusu was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation.

In his caution statement, the accused confessed that he did not take the entire sum at once but gradually diverted customer deposits over several months by failing to credit their accounts.

The court has remanded Owusu into custody pending further proceedings as investigations continue into the alleged theft.
