President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to establish two landmark projects in the Savannah Region — the Catholic Science and Technology University and a regional hospital in Damongo as part of his government’s broader vision to expand access to higher education and quality healthcare.
The President made the announcement when the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.
According to President Mahama, the proposed Catholic Science and Technology University will be funded through an initial $30 million grant from Chinese President Xi Jinping. The institution will focus on science, innovation, and applied research to support Ghana’s technological and human capital development.
He explained that the planned regional hospital in Damongo would serve not only the health needs of the people of the Savannah Region but also function as a teaching hospital for the university’s Faculty of Medical Sciences. The facility will train doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to bridge the human resource gap in Ghana’s healthcare sector.
“The establishment of the university and the hospital represents a major investment in education and healthcare infrastructure for the people of the Savannah Region and beyond,” President Mahama said, reaffirming his government’s commitment to advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to drive industrial growth and job creation.
Archbishop Naameh, who proposed both the name and location of the university, raised several concerns about educational and social challenges in northern Ghana and appealed to the President for policy interventions to address them.
The meeting was attended by key government officials, including the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu; Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari; Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President; and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
The proposed university and regional hospital are expected to serve as transformative institutions for the northern belt, fostering innovation, healthcare delivery, and community development in the years ahead.
