Energy Commission trains journalists on energy efficiency and conservation in Bolgatanga

About 20 journalists from various media outlets in the Upper East Region have benefited from a one-day training workshop organised by the Ghana Energy Commission to enhance their reporting skills on energy efficiency and conservation.

The workshop, held on October 13, 2025, at Tap Hotel in the Bolgatanga Municipality, brought together participants from television, radio, print, and online media.

The training highlighted that many journalists either avoid reporting on the energy sector due to limited understanding or occasionally misinform the public. Participants were educated on the differences in energy consumption among home appliances, with emphasis on the efficiency of LED bulbs compared to CFL bulbs.

They were also taught that purchasing appliances with energy-efficient labels is more economical and environmentally friendly. For instance, a new refrigerator may consume only about 385 units of electricity per year compared to 1,200 units used by an older model.

Addressing the participants after the training, Mr. Hubert Nsoh Zan, Assistant Manager for Energy Efficiency Regulations at the Ghana Energy Commission, said the workshop formed part of the Commission’s efforts to promote public awareness of energy efficiency through the media.

“The media plays an important role in communicating information to consumers so they can make informed choices and use energy-efficient appliances,” he said.

He stressed that journalists are key stakeholders in public education and policy advocacy and must therefore be well-informed to report accurately on energy-related issues.

Mr. Nsoh also urged consumers to check for certified labels on electrical products before purchasing them, warning that some unapproved appliances still find their way onto the market.

“We think that Ghanaian consumers deserve better, and we want to protect customers by encouraging them to buy products that are efficient, durable, and of good quality,” he stated.

He further encouraged consumers to embrace energy-efficient appliances to help save money and contribute to sustainable energy use in the country.
