A 43-year-old Customs Officer with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Torgbe Agbeti Dordoe, has been arraigned before the Adenta Circuit Court for allegedly extorting GH¢2,000 from a businessman at Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Dordoe, who serves with the Customs Division at KIA, has been charged with extortion but pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Mrs. Angela Attachie, the presiding judge. He was granted GH¢10,000 bail with one surety, and the case was adjourned to January 21, 2026.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the complainant, a businessman residing at Airport West in Accra, arrived in Ghana from Dubai on November 28, 2024, carrying two sets of Bose musical instruments.
During customs clearance, Dordoe assessed duties amounting to GH¢21,000, which the complainant duly paid and received an official receipt for. However, when the complainant explained that he had already paid duty on the same items during a previous visit, Dordoe allegedly demanded an additional GH¢2,000 in cash — this time without issuing a receipt.
When the businessman insisted that the duty be verified in the system and a receipt printed, Dordoe reportedly ignored him. Feeling extorted, the complainant later filed a report at the Airport Police Station.
Chief Inspector Lanyo told the court that when police contacted Dordoe about the allegation, he claimed to be on duty and promised to report on February 17, 2025, but failed to do so.
A formal letter was subsequently sent to the Officer in Charge of Customs at KIA on February 20, 2025, requesting confirmation of the incident and verification of the duty payments received by Dordoe. The request went unanswered.
A second letter was sent to the Customs Headquarters on April 4, 2025, requesting that the officer be released to assist with investigations, but that too drew no response.
Eventually, on April 28, 2025, Dordoe was served with a criminal summons to appear in court on May 12, 2025. He appeared as ordered, was arrested, and later charged with extortion.
The case continues in January 2026.
