PNC charts bold path to rebrand ahead of 2028 elections

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has reaffirmed its determination to rebrand, repackage, and aggressively market itself as part of a strategy to become a formidable force in the 2028 general election.

National Chairman of the party, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, made this clear when he addressed the opening of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at Abesim, near Sunyani, on Saturday. The gathering brought together party leader Bernard Mornah, as well as national and regional executives, to deliberate on restructuring and strengthening the PNC’s grassroots base.

As part of its re-organisation drive, Mr. Awingobit said the party leadership would soon embark on nationwide regional tours to engage with executives, address emerging challenges, and build stronger local structures. “From here we are also going to undertake tours to the various major media houses in Accra to get space and contribute to national discourses, and by doing so we will be building our great party as well,” he said.

He explained that NEC meetings would henceforth be rotated across regions as part of efforts to make the PNC more visible and attractive, while building credibility and deeper connections with its constituency-level supporters. Mr. Awingobit also urged regional executives to strengthen ties with local radio stations, while appealing to the media at large to provide the PNC the platform it needs to contribute meaningfully to national conversations.

Turning attention to international affairs, Mr. Awingobit praised President John Dramani Mahama for his boldness in drawing global attention to Africa’s struggles during his address at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80). “We are strongly behind President Mahama, and we appreciate how he is making Africa proud at the ongoing discourses at the UNGA 80,” he stated. He added, “In fact, President Mahama is really making Ghana and Africa proud and excellent contributions to the ongoing discussions clearly show that he is sensitive and understands the plight and myriad of Africa challenges.”

For his part, PNC leader Bernard Mornah unveiled a roadmap for the party’s internal renewal, announcing that constituency and regional primaries will be completed by the end of 2026. A National Delegates Congress is scheduled for 2027 to elect new national executives and the party’s flagbearer. He also appealed for unity, stressing the importance of all Nkrumahist-leaning parties forming a common front to contest the 2028 elections.

The party’s National Second Vice-Chairman, Sampson Alanyina Sampana, in a welcome address, commended the national leadership for its dedication. He described the decision to decentralise NEC meetings as a bold step toward consolidating grassroots support and building a stronger political vehicle for the future.
