President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that his government will embark on an ambitious sports infrastructure programme next year, with plans to build seven modern stadia across the country.
He made the announcement on Saturday afternoon when players and officials of Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.
According to the President, the initiative is designed to ensure that each of Ghana’s new regions has access to a standard stadium that meets modern requirements, thereby improving sports development and strengthening competitive football nationwide.
“The Finance Minister is going to present the budget in November, and I was telling the Sports Minister and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority that next year we are going to build about seven brand new stadia,” President Mahama said.
“We want that every new region should have a stadium that is fit for purpose so that we can improve the playing conditions and make our football more competitive.”
The President noted that the investment forms part of his administration’s broader vision of using sports as a tool for national development and youth empowerment.
