Gov’t must put its feet on the ground; everything is not okay in Ghana — NPP Communicator

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Tabitha Ayillah, has called on government to take urgent steps to address the growing security and social challenges in the country.

She said Ghana is facing several unresolved disputes and tensions, which, if not checked, could escalate into a bigger crisis.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, September 8, the NPP communicator stressed that the state cannot afford to downplay the threats that continue to emerge across different parts of the country.

“So far we are hearing that there are over 502 chieftaincy disputes in Ghana. The government must put its feet on the ground. Everything is not okay in Ghana. Let’s not kid ourselves,” she said.

Tabitha also expressed concern about recent violent confrontations between illegal miners and the military in Tontokrom, a community in the Ashanti region.

She stressed that government must act decisively to prevent the situation from worsening.

“You saw what happened in Obuasi and more recently in Tontokrom. If the military had not exercised restraint, we would have been talking about lives lost. These are not new problems, but they are even affecting our Global Peace Index, and so government needs to put its feet down and stop things from escalating,” she cautioned.

She further explained that her comments were not to stoke fear but to urge the authorities to respond to genuine threats to peace and stability.

According to her, women and children stand to suffer the most if such tensions are allowed to degenerate.

“Nobody is praying for war, because, listen, we the women and the children will be the worst affected in all this. And so if I speak about it, I speak about it because I am a mother who has children, and honestly, speaking, I don’t know how to protect myself, let alone to protect my children,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, her statement also come amid Gbiniyiri conflict in the Savannah Region which was triggered by a land dispute.

The violence has so far claimed at least 31 lives and displaced nearly 50,000 residents since it erupted on August 24.

More than 13,000 Ghanaians are also reported to have fled to neighbouring Ivory Coast for safety.
