The Member of Parliament for Agotime-Ziope and member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Charles Akwasi Agbeve, has assured management of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will honour its manifesto pledge to upgrade the facility into a teaching hospital.
Mr. Agbeve explained that the transition from a secondary facility to a teaching hospital is a political decision, and one that the NDC has already captured in its “Resetting Agenda” manifesto.
The lawmaker gave the assurance when the committee met with the leadership of the hospital on Thursday, September 4.
“Fortunately, it has been captured in the manifesto of the NDC. It’s in the resetting agenda that this facility will be made a teaching hospital,” he stressed.
He further observed that Ridge Hospital is already operating as a teaching hospital in practice, given its role in clinical training.
According to him, formalising its status will allow the facility to operate under its own board and access tertiary-level health insurance tariffs.
“As for this issue, in fact, you are practically a teaching hospital so far as the clinicals are concerned, and we are going to push that. It is merely about formalising the status, then you have your own board and take your own decisions,” Mr. Agbeve stated.
The MP further noted that the Health Committee will engage the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to ensure the promise is carried through.
