The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has accused the party’s national executives of openly favouring former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the lead-up to the party’s primaries.
In a statement, campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng criticised the use of the NPP’s official social media platforms to livestream only Dr Bawumia’s nomination filing, describing it as “a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach.”
He argued that the move fits into a broader pattern of conduct by the leadership to give Dr Bawumia “an undue advantage,” insisting it mirrored incidents from the previous primaries. “These unfortunate acts were among the reasons for our poor performance in past elections. Yet, clearly, we seem not to have learnt any lessons,” he said.
Mr Kwarteng linked the party’s electoral decline directly to Dr Bawumia’s stewardship. “Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party's history: a 31 per cent drop in national votes, a 16 per cent decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” he claimed.
At a time when the NPP should be repairing its base, Mr Kwarteng accused the leadership of instead “shamelessly projecting him as the establishment choice by giving him undue advantages and platforms.”
He warned that if such practices persist, rival candidates may have no alternative but to chart their own path. “The grassroots would not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!” he declared.
The NPP is scheduled to choose its presidential candidate for the 2028 elections in January, with Dr Bawumia and Mr Agyapong considered the leading contenders.

The grassroots choice have always been Dr Bawumia. Having money to throw at them and trying to force them to cho9se ypu will not work. It is that simple. Having money does not translate to a good leader. It is luck.
