The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals linked to the disturbances that disrupted the Ablekuma North rerun elections.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Yohuno said the suspects are currently being processed and will soon be arraigned.

“As of yesterday, eight suspects had been arrested. They are being processed, and based on advice from the regional commander, they will appear before court either tomorrow or Friday,” he disclosed.

The IGP assured the public that the police administration remains committed to ensuring justice is served. He emphasized that officers who fall short of professional standards will also be held accountable.

Responding to concerns about the assault of a journalist during the rerun, Mr. Yohuno dismissed rumours that the implicated officer had merely been transferred.

“We immediately withdrew the officer and interdicted him. When an officer is interdicted, their uniform is taken away, and they cannot return to work. The rumour about his transfer is completely false,” he explained.

He added that the Police Professional Standards Bureau had already completed its investigations into the matter.

“I have received the report, and a service enquiry will be conducted into his conduct. Disciplinary action will follow as recommended,” the IGP confirmed.

Mr. Yohuno reiterated that accountability is a cornerstone of the police service, both in its dealings with civilians and within its own ranks.
