Ablekuma North rerun: Macho men disrupts voting at Odorkor Methodist Church station as Police remain helpless

Tensions boiled over during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North on Friday, July 11, when a group of unidentified thugs stormed a polling station, unleashing violence and throwing the electoral process into disarray.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie was reportedly assaulted in the chaos, sustaining injuries during the attack. Eyewitnesses described the men as heavily built and arriving in a coordinated fashion, striking fear among voters and election officials.

The violent intrusion triggered panic at the centre and forced a temporary suspension of voting as terrified citizens fled the scene. Security personnel eventually intervened, but their response was widely seen as inadequate in preventing the attack.

Despite the Electoral Commission’s heightened security arrangements for the rerun, the incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of police protection at vulnerable polling stations.

The rerun, which covers 19 polling centres, was called to resolve a months-long electoral impasse stemming from disputed results in the December 2024 general elections. The outcome will determine who finally represents Ablekuma North in Parliament, after the seat remained vacant for over half a year.

While the NPP officially announced a boycott of the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie rejected the party's position and is contesting as an independent. Her defiance, coupled with deepening partisan tensions, has added fuel to an already volatile situation.

The attack on Nana Akua has further heightened concerns about voter intimidation, political violence, and the safety of candidates in Ghana’s electoral process. Political observers and civil society groups are now calling for urgent investigations and swift action against those responsible.

As the Electoral Commission pushes forward with the rerun, the security of candidates, voters, and officials remains a top concern, especially in constituencies where political stakes are high and tensions run deep.
