CFF-Ghana calls for immediate national intervention in Nkwanta South conflict

The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

The organisation is urging the government to take immediate action to prevent further humanitarian crises.

The conflict, which has claimed over seven lives, has displaced several residents, including women, children, elderly individuals, government workers, and people with disabilities.

The violence has also led to the closure of schools and the widespread destruction of properties. The recent capture of some communities, including Keri, by armed groups has pushed the situation to the brink of catastrophe.

In a press release signed by Mr. Richard Kasu, Executive Director of CFF-Ghana, "the situation in Nkwanta South is a grave concern, and we urge the government to act swiftly to prevent further humanitarian crisis. The conflict has already claimed several lives, and it's essential that we work together to find a peaceful resolution."

The escalating conflict in the Nkwanta South Municipality a great concern; CFF-Ghana calls for immediate national intervention.

Accra, Ghana; Thursday, 3rd July, 2025
The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana), the coordinating entity of the #Safeguarding Our Democracy Initiative# is deeply alarmed by the

worsening crisis in the Nkwanta South Municipality in Oti Region of Ghana and calls on the government of Ghana

to act now to prevent further humanitarian crisis.

The resurgence of violence, following the brutal killing of a student of the Nkwanta Senior High School on Wednesday, 25th June, 2025 has plunged Nkwanta South into a state of anarchy. In fact, the renewed ethnic conflict has tragically claimed over 7 lives with several people from Akyode, Adele, Chala among others displaced with schools closed

With women, children, the elderly, government workers, especially teachers and disabled individuals running for their lives.

Also, the recent capture of some communities including Keri by blood thirsty hooligans in which massive mayhem including property destruction visited on the people has pushed Nkwanta South

to the edge of catastrophe, reviving fears of a broader tribal conflict reminiscent of the Guinea fowl tribal war of 1994 (Kokomba & Nanumba Conflict) which claimed thousands of innocent lives. This historic tragedy is brutal reminder of the debilitating

consequences of tribal conflicts.
Despite several calls for a ceasefire,
the situation remains volatile.
In response to the ethnic conflict, we recommend the following actions:

1.
That the government of Ghana including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defense together with relevant state agencies to urgently intervene with the view of protecting lives and properties to avert further casualties;

2. That NADMO urgently deliver humanitarian aid to affected communities in Nkwanta South,

ensuring access to food, shelter, healthcare, and protection;

3. That government together with the National Peace Council (NPC) support Oti Regional House of Chiefs to immediately facilitate ceasefire dialogue among the feuding communities for peaceful resolution of the crisis;

4. That all individuals linked to the conflict are immediately arrested to face the full rigours of the law;
