Leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and legal practitioner, Elikplim Agbemava, has taken a swipe at Prof. Ransford Gyampo over what he describes as interference in the work of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Agbemava’s comments follow reports that Prof. Gyampo attempted to influence the operations of the OSP, particularly in relation to the execution of a search warrant.

Reacting to the development, Agbemava said, “Very unethical for Prof Gyampo to have criticized the Special Prosecutor for executing a search warrant in this matter.”

He continued, “the audacity alone shakes my bones to the core. As a public official and a member of the same government you must be careful not to get ahead of yourself. Concentrate on the job you have been assigned.”

Background
The issue stems from claims by the Office of the Special Prosecutor that Prof. Gyampo, who lectures in political science at the University of Ghana, made contact with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng during an active investigation.

According to reports, Prof. Gyampo allegedly placed calls and sent messages to the OSP while its officers were conducting a raid on the offices of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

However, the Director General of the Ghana Shippers Authority has refuted any suggestion of meddling. He explained that his communication with the OSP was purely to advise the Special Prosecutor “not to cause financial loss to the state.”

He has also expressed readiness to make public WhatsApp exchanges between himself and the OSP as proof that he did not attempt to interfere.
