Senior Lecturer at the Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Dr. Barnabas Addai Amanfo, is calling on Ghanaians to adopt lifelong learning as a national mindset in order to harmonize the country’s formal and non-formal educational systems.

According to Dr. Amanfo, many people become confined within the limits of their initial education and fail to adapt to the evolving demands of modern society.

He emphasized that continuous learning is essential in a world where technology and education are in constant flux.

He made these remarks during a panel discussion on OTEC FM’s Nyansapo morning show on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Dr. Amanfo explained that lifelong learning equips individuals with the skills to educate themselves beyond the classroom and enables flexibility to switch academic or career paths when necessary.

He used the evolution of Ghana’s drinking water as a metaphor to illustrate societal transformation and the need to upgrade one’s knowledge and skills accordingly. “Ghana uses to patronize 'kyekyere water, we then moved to sachet water, again there was the introduction of bottle water and now dispensers,” he said. “All these societal changes should tell people to upgrade their education and skills to keep up,” Dr. Amanfo referenced.

He also pointed out how standards in the teaching profession have evolved. He noted that while “set A” certificates once qualified individuals to teach, a university degree is now the minimum requirement. This, he said, underscores the need for people to evolve academically and professionally if they want to stay relevant.

Dr. Amanfo concluded by urging Ghanaians to be more innovative, creative, and bold in their approach to learning and personal development. He stressed that embracing change and continuously upgrading one’s skills are essential for thriving in today’s dynamic environment.
