Dear critical reader, the question to ponder over is: As AI singularity occurs, is an America that is a global force for good vital to the world? Humanity cannot afford to have AI that could wipe it out - and international collaboration is needed to prevent that.
Yet we have turmoil in a world where wars are raging and killing countless numbers of civilians and causing destruction as cities and towns are reduced to rubble.
It is in that light that one could not help noticing the irony in news reports of an American defence secretary - alleged to have an alcoholism challenge, who also wasn't a good steward of managing funds for a veterans' charity he led, representing an administration that is bellicose in its communications strategy with the world, and revels in the imperialistic notion of using lethal force to seize foreign territory it covets arbitrarily - lecturing Indo-Pacific nations that are supposedly its allies on the supposed common threat posed to their alliance by China.
He was completely oblivious to the plain truth that the US is busy recklessly antagonising its own allies across the world by including them in a global tariff war it has unleashed; and, worse, that America is now a superpower that also tears up international agreements unilaterally, thereby making a complete nonsense of the rules-based international order that has kept post-WW2 peace for decades.
Yet, the reality is that through its actions, China is clearly signalling globally that it seeks and wants a peaceful world in which it can continue to trade and prosper.
Such a polarised situation must not be allowed to persist by people of good conscience and goodwill around the globe.
It strikes one that there is a lot that traditional African culture based on the societal principle of Ubuntu can teach humankind - as authoritarianism gains currency in a world in flux, which also faces the existential threat posed by rogue sentient AI technology, at a time in human history when the need for societies anchored on a common good guiding ethos that focuses on engendering the sense of community and fellow-feeling amongst people flowing from the virtues of love and compassion has seldom been greater and more pressing.
If humanity faces an existential threat from AI singularity, then, although allegedly secretly contemptuous of Africa and Africans, America's current leaders would be wise to learn from a traditional people who value societal common good based on Ubuntu and focus on becoming a global force for good in the face of unprecedented emerging challenges confronting humankind in the AI era.
A word to the wise...
