In a landmark event at the Supreme Court in Accra, Justice Noble Jerome Nkrumah of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday administered the oath of office to newly appointed members of the National Media Commission (NMC).

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the 18-member body elected Prof. Akua Biritwum as Chairperson, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to lead the Commission since its inception in 1993. Prof. Biritwum, representing the Office of the President, will serve a three-year term. She is joined by Richard Mawuli Quashigah as the second presidential nominee on the Commission.

The Commission’s diverse membership reflects representation from key institutions and civil society organizations across Ghana’s media and governance landscape.

The full list of newly sworn-in members includes:

  • Cecil Sunkwa-Mills – Representing the Association of Private Broadcasters

  • Hajj Muhammad Amir Kpakpo Addo – Federation of Muslim Councils and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission

  • Anthony Obeng Afrane – Ghana Association of Writers and the Ghana Library Association

  • Ernest Owusu Addo – Publishers and Owners of the Private Press

  • Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson – Institutions Training Journalists and Communicators

  • Esther Numaba Cobbah – Ghana Advertisers Association and the Institute of Public Relations

  • Eva Okyere – Ghana Bar Association

  • Joseph Yao Hotor – Trades Union Congress

  • Abena Annobea Asare – National Council on Women and Development

  • Rev. Isaac Owusu – Ghana National Association of Teachers

  • Rev. Ruby Amable – Christian Groups including the National Catholic Secretariat, Christian Council, and Pentecostal Council

  • Mahama Shaibu – Representing the Majority in Parliament

  • Philip Fiifi Buckman – Also representing the Majority in Parliament

  • Korkor Laurette Asante – Representing the Minority in Parliament

The NMC plays a critical role in promoting press freedom, regulating the media, and ensuring ethical standards across the industry. With Prof. Biritwum at the helm, stakeholders are hopeful for renewed momentum in media accountability and development.
