Railway workers across Ghana have embarked on a strike after going without salaries for seven months—a situation that has plunged many into financial distress and personal turmoil.

The nationwide industrial action has paralyzed train operations, prompting urgent calls for the Ghana Railway Company and the Ministry of Transport to resolve the long-standing salary crisis.

At a demonstration in Accra, workers expressed their deep frustration and desperation over the prolonged delays.

“We haven't been paid for the past seven months and haven't received any updates. As a result, we'll stop working and make our concerns known to management,” said Union Chairman Acheampong Justice.

Electrician Nii Lartey revealed how the crisis has unraveled his personal life. “I'm in my eighth month without salary, which has caused my wife to leave me. I have nine children who need school fees, but I can't afford to pay.”

Others echoed similar sentiments about the daily struggle to survive. “What will you do when you go home without money for food? We haven't been paid since October of last year and we are debtors in our own land,” one worker said.

Kwaku Mensah, a Principal Supply Officer nearing retirement, shared his heartbreak after decades of service. “I can't even buy ice water with my own money. With only 6 to 7 months until retirement, I've worked over 41 years, yet my SSNIT savings amount to only 14,000 cedis.”

Grace Amihere, who works in the Accounts Department, described how the hardship has forced her to withdraw from social life. She said she can no longer contribute to family funerals or attend social gatherings because she simply can't afford it.

The branch chairman of the union highlighted the systemic issues facing the workforce: “After 35 years, my pay is under 1,500 cedis. Despite being 960 employees, we haven't been paid, making retirement here disappointing.”

As the strike continues, pressure is mounting on government officials to act swiftly. Until concrete solutions are provided, the railways remain at a standstill, and the lives of hundreds of workers hang in the balance.
