Renowned legal practitioner and stalwart of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Elikplim Lorlormava Agbemava, has voiced concerns about the 'rapidly declining' image of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and called for its rebranding.
In a social media post, Agbemava raised concerns about the comparisons of the GBA to a "Chop Bar," a term used to describe informal eateries in the country.
He emphasised that such perceptions are unhealthy and urged the 'once-respected' association to work harder to change the narrative.
The legal luminary's remarks come amidst public backlash against the lawyers' association for its recent resolution demanding that President Mahama revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo.
Many Ghanaians have condemned the association for what they perceive as a biased stance on national issues, leading to ridicule and the unflattering "Chop Bar" label.
In his call for change, Lawyer Agbemava proposed a rebranding effort, suggesting a new name, "The Law Society", to better reflect the professionalism and integrity of the association.
"The constant comparisons by Ghanaians of the Ghana Bar to a Chop Bar is not healthy. Let us work harder to change this perception. We can also adopt a fresh name like The Law Society. That will make things better. I don’t belong to a Chop Bar," he wrote.

Mr Lawyer, your name betrays your character and identity. No wonder you are an Ndc lawyer. I believe you have never won any case in court before, hence your submission in this write up is synonymous to a a first year law student.
