At Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), students undergo a grueling academic journey filled with moments of intense pressure, competition, and, of course, stress. One of the most pressing things on every student’s mind throughout their four years is their Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA). From the moment students step onto campus, maintaining a strong CWA becomes a focal point for academic success. But what happens behind the scenes? What is the untold story that most students go through to maintain this elusive number, and how does the KNUST AIM app add to the drama and fear of it all?

The Pressure of Maintaining CWA
At KNUST, CWA isn’t just a number; it’s a symbol of your academic journey. It’s what determines your eligibility for various opportunities: from scholarships, to internships, to the prestigious first-class honors at graduation. The CWA is the golden key to a student’s future, so the stakes are high. Each course, each test, and each grade counts—sometimes even more than students can handle.

But here’s the catch: maintaining a good CWA is not easy. Whether you’re aiming for a First-Class (70% and above) or striving to avoid falling below a Second-Class Upper (60%-69%), the competition is fierce. The pressure to keep that number high is relentless, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve had an off-day, an illness, or some personal setback. Your CWA doesn’t care about your excuses; it only cares about the grades you achieve.

In the eyes of most students, CWA is a reflection of their academic identity— a high CWA represents a student who is on the rise, a future leader, a candidate for jobs at top companies, and a symbol of academic excellence. But if the numbers don’t add up? The disappointment is unimaginable.

The Fear of Trail Courses, Resits, and the Constant Battle to Stay on Track

Among KNUST students, one of the most dreaded terms is trail course. Having to retake a course is every student’s nightmare because it means more pressure, more sleepless nights, and the gnawing thought that this failure could affect your CWA.

The fear of resits—repeating a course after failing it—is real. Students who fail a course are at risk of losing their high CWA, and worse, they may have to face the dreaded First-Class dreams being shattered. A single trail can make you fall from a First-Class to a Second-Class Upper, and a Second-Class Upper to a Second-Class Lower. This weight of maintaining the perfect academic performance becomes too much for some to handle.

KNUST’s grading system makes it even more difficult to stay on top of your game. With the pressure to achieve the best grades, students fear that even a slight slip can lead to the infamous fail grade (F) or a D, which could ruin everything. Here’s a breakdown of the grading system that keeps students on edge:

KNUST Grading System: The Real Challenge

  • First Class: 70% and above
  • Second Class Upper: 60%-69.99%
  • Second Class Lower: 50%-59.99%
  • Pass: 40%-49.99%
  • Fail: Below 40%

The grading system is clear, but the pressure to score an A or B often leaves students in an unending state of stress. The constant fear that a single poor grade will affect your entire CWA creates a high-stakes environment that feels like a race against time.

The Role of the AIM App: A Source of Anxiety

Here’s where the AIM app comes into play, and it’s no exaggeration to say that this app is both a blessing and a curse for KNUST students. The moment the semester results are released, students are faced with a singular, dreaded task: opening the AIM app and checking their results.

The AIM app is like a ticking time bomb. For students, it’s the ultimate test of emotional strength. The moment you click on the “Check Results” option, time seems to freeze. There’s a lag time between pressing the button and the results loading, and in that time, a million thoughts race through the student’s mind. “What if I failed? What if my CWA drops? What if I won’t be able to graduate with honors?”

The tension during this waiting period is unbearable. Each second feels like an eternity, and as the app slowly loads, the screen fills with a sense of fear. The longer the app takes to load, the more intense the anxiety becomes. You keep refreshing the page, but the result is still the same—nothing, just that dreaded loading circle.

And then, the moment of truth arrives: your results finally appear on screen. Whether the grades are good or bad, the result is a moment of intense emotional release. For many students, it’s the worst moment of their academic lives, the crushing feeling of disappointment when they don’t meet their expectations. For others, it’s a moment of relief and joy when they see the high grades they had hoped for.

But what makes the AIM app especially cruel is that it doesn’t give you the option to forget about the results. Whether you get a perfect score or not, the reality is that you can’t escape it. It’s right there, staring you in the face, and there’s no hiding from the results.

The Fear of the AIM App: More Than Just Results

Beyond the grades themselves, the AIM app represents something even deeper: the stress and pressure that every KNUST student experiences throughout the semester. The app symbolizes the hopes and dreams of students—their families’ expectations, the future of their careers, and their personal success. It’s not just a results-checking tool; it’s a life-altering moment that will decide whether you can proceed to the next step of your journey with confidence or whether you’ll have to make do with something less.Students get stressed out just thinking about the results. Many suffer from burnout after long study hours, sacrificing personal lives and health just to pass their exams. After spending countless hours in the library or working on assignments, checking the AIM app becomes a daunting, emotional rollercoaster ride. And for some, the wait for results is like a countdown to a new chapter in their academic lives—a chapter that could go either way.

A Final Word: Keep Pushing Forward
While the CWA and the AIM app might bring with them moments of tension, disappointment, and stress, they also serve as powerful reminders of how far KNUST students go to achieve their goals. Every student faces setbacks, and it’s in those moments of failure that true character is built. The fear of the AIM app? It’s a part of the journey.

So, to every student out there, don’t let the fear of checking your results hold you back. Your CWA doesn’t define you. It’s your determination, your passion, and your resilience that truly matter. Embrace the struggle, knowing that each step, even the toughest ones, is leading you toward your future success.

Keep pushing forward, students. After all, no great story is ever written without a few plot twists along the way. You’ve got this!

I was having 3 resit papers and able to wrote them and passed, but it didn't increase my CWA. The papers I wrote was 3 papers and I had “A” in two courses and “C+” in one course. I passed all my first semester exams and it was released together but it did not increase my CWA.
