President Mahama was clear, we're not going to use public funds to continue National Cathedral – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reaffirmed the government’s firm position that public funds will not be allocated to the construction of the National Cathedral.

Addressing the issue, Kwakye Ofosu underscored President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering stance on the matter.

“The president was clear that we are not going to use public funds to continue that project,” he stated.

Offering his own perspective, the Minister expressed skepticism about the necessity of the project, stating that while religious bodies are free to pursue such initiatives independently, it should not come at a cost to the state.

“I am very clear that we don’t need a national cathedral. If religious organisations, churches are minded to put up a cathedral and they request for land from government and government offers it and they are able to generate their resources to build it, all well and good. But I don’t believe that we should put public funds into a national cathedral,” he said.

Kwakye Ofosu further emphasized that the government has maintained this position from the onset and will not divert taxpayer money toward the project.

“What is certain is that President Mahama is not going to put GHS400 million of taxpayers’ money into that project,” he added.

The statement comes amidst ongoing public debate surrounding the National Cathedral, with many calling for clarity on the government’s financial commitments.
