The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has donated GH₵100,000 to traders in Kumasi whose businesses were devastated by a recent fire outbreak at Adum Blue Light.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, presented the donation to the traders’ leadership on Friday during a visit to the site. The visit allowed him and other party executives to assess the extent of the destruction firsthand.
Accompanying him were Henry Nana Boakye (National Organiser), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as "Wontumi" (Ashanti Regional Chairman), Raphael Sarfo Patrick (Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser), Aikens Addai-Poku (Bosomtwe Constituency Chairman), Fiifi Mensah (Bantama Constituency Chairman), and other key party officials.
After inspecting the site, Kodua called on the NDC-led government to provide seed money to support the affected traders. However, he opposed the government’s plan to take the lead in reconstructing the area, arguing that traders should be given the opportunity to rebuild their own structures.
“Government may have good intentions to reconstruct the place for them, but we all know government processes—it may take one, two, three, or even four years. The traders themselves are ready to come together and rebuild. All they need is the chance to do it on their own rather than waiting for government intervention, which could create further delays and complications. This is their request, and the NPP fully supports it,” he stated in an interview with journalists.
Kodua assured the traders that the NPP would continue to stand by them.
“Even though we are in opposition, we have managed to raise some funds to support them. We will always remember them, and they can rely on us to attend to their needs.”
He reiterated that the GH₵100,000 donation was meant to help the traders rebuild their structures. He also revealed that NEC would convene to raise additional funds to further assist those affected.
