Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended financial and material support to traders who lost their businesses in the recent devastating fire at Adum, Kumasi. He donated GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to help them rebuild.
The fire, which erupted in the early hours of Friday, March 24, tore through the bustling commercial district, reducing numerous shops and stalls to ashes. Goods worth millions of Ghana cedis were destroyed, leaving traders in despair. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours before managing to bring it under control, but by then, the damage was extensive.
During his visit to the affected area on Tuesday, March 25, Dr. Bawumia expressed his deep sympathy for the victims and urged the public and private sector to step in and assist.
“I am donating GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags to the victims, and I urge private individuals to also support the traders in getting their livelihoods back,” he stated.
His intervention comes amid renewed concerns over fire safety in major trading centers. The Adum market fire is one of several incidents in recent years that have left traders grappling with huge losses, prompting calls for better preventive measures and improved emergency response systems.
