Report drivers charging unapproved fares to Police – GPRTU to commuters

Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has urged commuters to report any driver demanding unauthorized transport fare increases to the nearest police station.

Speaking on Citi FM's Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, he emphasized that only the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have the authority to negotiate and announce transport fare adjustments.

“Do not pay any new fare to the drivers when they demand for it and report to the immediate police station. We have laws in the country. There is no law which says any transport operator can come up with it own transport fares. If we allow that, then it means we will be cheating the public.”

His remarks come in response to the Alliance of Drivers Ghana’s announcement of a 20% increase in transport fares, citing rising fuel prices, escalating engine oil costs, and the increasing prices of vehicle spare parts.

However, in a statement released earlier today, March 18, the Road Transport Operators urged the public to disregard any transport fare adjustments not issued by the GPRTU or GRTCC.

According to the operators, these two bodies are the only mandated institutions responsible for determining and publicizing official transport fares in the country.
