President John Dramani Mahama has made significant changes in the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces, appointing new acting Service Chiefs pending consultation with the Council of State.
The appointments, which take effect from March 24, 2025, mark a strategic move to enhance the country’s military command structure.
The newly appointed acting Service Chiefs include Brigadier General William Agyapong as Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, and Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff. Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong has been appointed Acting Chief of Air Staff, while Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan assumes the role of Acting Chief of Staff.
Earlier today, President Mahama met with the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House. He expressed gratitude for their dedicated service to the nation and acknowledged their contributions to national security and stability. He assured them that their expertise and experience would still be valued as Ghana navigates its security challenges.
Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who signed the official statement, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Armed Forces through experienced leadership.
This reshuffle comes at a crucial time as the government intensifies efforts to modernize the military and enhance national security. The new acting Service Chiefs are expected to bring fresh perspectives and leadership to the Armed Forces as Ghana continues to address both internal and external security concerns.
