Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed unhappiness over how Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s dismissal was communicated.
The lawmaker said the President, in his letter signed by his spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, did not acknowledge the service of the immediate past police chief.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 14, Afenyo-Markin said the letter was too straightforward.
“We heard that the president has sacked him, and in his place, COP Yohuno is taking over. The president has dismissed the IGP. In the statement from the government’s spokesperson and the minister in charge of government communications, there was no gratitude expressed. The statement issued was to the effect that the president has made a new appointment,” he said.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been sworn in as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, follows the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office.
COP Yohuno’s appointment was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.
With forty years of experience, COP Yohuno is expected to lead the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service.
However, his appointment has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some arguing that Dr. George Akuffo Dampare should have been maintained.
Notably, IMANI Africa petitioned the Supreme Court to restrain Presidents from appointing security chiefs, advocating for a non-partisan approach to such sensitive positions.

Each time this Afenyo thing opens his mouth, he loses the NPP 5 points. What does the phrase "my heartfelt appreciation" mean to Afenyo?. Why am I even wasting my time asking when his party "intellectuals" equate "review" to "cancel". Gyimiie paaaaa nie!!!!!!!!!!!!
