It is both fitting and necessary to pay tribute to the visionary leadership of past and current leaders who have tirelessly worked to make the GonjaLand Youth Association a force for positive change in the lives of the youth and communities of Gonjaland. The success and growth of the GonjaLand Youth Association owe a great deal to the dedication, vision, and hard work of its past leaders.
From its inception, the idea of an annual gathering of the youth to discuss development, peace, and unity was birthed by those who saw the potential for a stronger, more cohesive Gonja kingdom. These past leaders laid the groundwork for the GonjaLand Youth Association to become an influential body that brings together people of all ages, backgrounds, and professions to engage in constructive conversations about the future of Gonjaland.
The current leadership, under the guidance of Lawyer Mohammed Osman Amin, continues to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors, keeping the spirit of unity, development, and peace alive within the savannah region.
The GonjaLand Youth Association (GLYA) has consistently played a pivotal role in shaping the social, cultural, and political landscape of Gonjaland. Through its annual gatherings, which bring together members from various branches both within and outside of Gonjaland and the diaspora, it provides a unique platform for dialogue, reflection, and action on pressing issues affecting the youth, development, and peaceful coexistence within the Gonjaland kingdom and the broader northern region of Ghana.
The upcoming 2025 Gonjaland Youth Annual Gathering, set to take place in Sawla from April 17th-20th, promises to further cement the association's role in fostering unity, progress, and leadership within the Gonja community. The event, which will also include the election of new national executives, holds significant potential for the future direction of the association and the continued advocacy for the welfare of the youth.
One of the most profound impacts of the Gonjaland Youth Association's annual gatherings has been its instrumental role in addressing and resolving chieftaincy and land boundary conflicts within Gonjaland. These conferences have brought together various stakeholders, including traditional leaders, community elders, and youth groups, creating an open and collaborative space for dialogue. The association’s ability to facilitate such discussions has been crucial in maintaining peace and harmony among different factions within Gonjaland, which is an ongoing challenge for many communities in the region.
Through these gatherings, the GonjaLand Youth Association has worked relentlessly to advocate for peaceful coexistence, fostering understanding and cooperation among diverse tribes and ethnic groups within Gonjaland and outside the savannah region. A case in point is the conflict in Lukula in the Wasipe traditional area and the Kong, where the GonjaLand Youth Association had to engage the Dagbon and Mamprusi Youth Associations and the Birifo Youth Association to discuss lasting peaceful coexistence. The relationships built during these conferences play a key role in ensuring that the youth of these regions collaborate on shared goals of development and social peace.
The gatherings also serve as an essential platform for youth empowerment. The selection of new national executives is an important process that allows the youth to play an active role in shaping the future of Gonjaland. These elections are a testament to the association's commitment to democratic principles, with the youth taking on leadership positions that affect their communities both locally and nationally.
In the last central committee meeting held in Sawla on 21st February 2025, Lawyer Mohammed Osman Amin announced that this year's conference will see in attendance other youth groups from the Northern, North-East, and Upper East regions. The presence of these youth associations from other regions adds an element of cross-cultural exchange, allowing the youth of Gonjaland to learn from the experiences of others. This interaction will foster a greater sense of responsibility and leadership potential among the youth, which translates into better governance and advocacy for the community. In addition, it will help strengthen relationships across regional boundaries.
The gathering will also provide a rare opportunity for the youth of Gonjaland to interact with their counterparts from the Dagomba, Nanumba, Konkonba, and Bonabato( a youth group in the upper East region) communities, among others. Such exchanges foster a deeper understanding of regional dynamics, mitigate potential tensions, and encourage a collective focus on national unity.
The Gonjaland Youth Association's ability to bring together youth from diverse backgrounds promotes tolerance and collaboration, two essential components of a stable society. Through these interactions, the youth of Gonjaland not only learn the importance of peaceful coexistence but also gain insights into the benefits of working together for the common good.
Sawla 2025 promises to be a colorful and memorable event. The Dr.-led administration has started well and needs more of our support.
In conclusion, the annual Gonjaland Youth Association gatherings serve as a cornerstone for the development of Gonjaland and the empowerment of its youth. By addressing key issues such as chieftaincy and land boundary disputes, promoting peaceful coexistence, and fostering youth leadership, the association has proven to be a vital force in shaping the future of Gonjaland and northern Ghana. As the association continues to evolve and grow, its role in promoting unity, peace, and development will remain indispensable.
The 2025 Annual Gathering in Sawla, with the election of new national executives, will undoubtedly mark another significant milestone in the association’s ongoing efforts to transform the future of Gonjaland and the wider region.
