Gregory Afoko’s murder retrial rescheduled for April 7

An Accra Criminal Court has postponed the third retrial of Gregory Afoko to April 7 at the request of the prosecution.

The adjournment was granted on the condition that the seven-member jury is properly constituted before proceedings resume.

Afoko, who spent nearly a decade in remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, is currently out on GHS 500,000 bail, while his co-accused, Asabke Alangdi, remains on death row.

Afoko is facing trial for the May 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died from acid burns after being attacked at his Bolgatanga residence. Before succumbing to his injuries, Mahama reportedly identified Afoko and Alangdi as his attackers.

In April 2024, a jury convicted Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitted Afoko of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder, delivering a split verdict. However, the court ordered a retrial.

Presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, the court is set to commence the third retrial once all jury composition issues are resolved.
