Renowned highlife musician Rex Owusu Marfo, popularly known as Rex Omar, has been appointed as a presidential staffer for the Blackstar Experience, a cultural initiative under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
The Blackstar Experience aims to celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, promote African creativity, and foster national pride. The initiative will feature festivals, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges, providing a platform to showcase Ghanaian arts and traditions both locally and internationally.
Born on February 6 in Kumasi, Rex Omar has gained widespread recognition across West Africa and beyond. His distinctive fusion of Afro-pop, jazz, and traditional Ghanaian rhythms has captivated audiences in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Benin, Britain, France, and Togo.
With a career spanning over two decades, Rex Omar has produced several hits, including the chart-topping "Abiba", from his widely successful album "Dangerous", which sold over 300,000 units. He leads the nu-Ashanty Band, a twelve-piece ensemble known for electrifying performances, including notable appearances at Jazz à Ouaga in Burkina Faso (2002) and Les Escales Festival in France (2005).
Over the years, Rex Omar has received numerous accolades, including the 2004 Ghana Music Award for Best Contemporary Song of the Year and a Kora Awards nomination. His fearless approach to tackling issues within the Ghanaian music industry has earned him both admiration and controversy. His 2006 comeback hit "Da Di Da Da" reaffirmed his enduring influence in the music scene.
