Asantehene destools Ohwim Chief over illegal mining

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has removed Nana Kusi Baaye II from his position as Chief of Ohwim following multiple allegations, including illegal mining and land-related misconduct.

The decision was made during a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on Monday, February 24, 2025. Nana Kusi Baaye II, who had ruled Ohwim for 16 years, faced accusations of violating the Asantehene’s Great Oath, engaging in extortion, selling land unlawfully, and facilitating illegal mining operations.

During the proceedings, he was found guilty of the charges after testimonies from his own family members, who accused him of misusing his authority for personal gain. They alleged that he fraudulently sold family lands, falsely claiming to act on behalf of the Asantehene, and later allocated portions of these lands for illegal mining activities.

Initially summoned for invoking the Asantehene’s Great Oath under false pretenses, the chief’s case quickly expanded to include additional allegations, including perjury in a chieftaincy dispute.

Following a thorough review, the Asantehene ruled for his immediate destoolment, emphasizing his commitment to upholding the integrity of traditional leadership and the sacred Golden Stool.

Despite his removal, Nana Kusi Baaye II has maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing.
