Dear Honorable Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the manner in which deceased individuals are displayed during funerals, particularly in some parts of Ghana. It is troubling to witness how the dignity of the dead is sometimes compromised through excessive exposure, unsanitary conditions, and prolonged public displays.
While I acknowledge the cultural importance of funerals in our society, I strongly believe that there should be regulations to ensure that the dignity of the deceased is preserved. The open display of dead bodies poses significant health risks, exposes families to emotional distress, and may even contradict our traditional values of respect and honor.
I humbly urge your office to consider enacting laws or regulations that:
- Restrict the public display of corpses to controlled and dignified settings.
- Enforce hygienic and professional handling of bodies at funerals.
- Encourage the use of mortuary viewing rooms instead of open-air displays.
- Educate communities on more respectful and sanitary funeral practices that align with both cultural traditions and public health standards.
I believe these measures will help balance cultural customs with modern dignity and hygiene. Furthermore, I appeal to your esteemed office to engage traditional leaders, religious bodies, and health experts in shaping policies that uphold the honor of the deceased while promoting public safety.
I trust that your leadership will help create a more respectful and dignified approach to funeral practices in Ghana. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter, and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Frank Agyekum
