CDG-GH condemns deliberate political attacks on Dr. Johnson Asiamah

Caucus for Democratic Governance, Ghana strongly condemns the deliberate political attacks on the professional and personal integrity of Dr. Johnson Asiamah's appointment by H.E. the president as the Governor of the Bank Ghana by some opposition elements. Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the Governor of the bank rose through the ranks of the central bank by dint of hard work and professional integrity.

Dr. Asiamah was cruelly ousted from the central bank by the immediate past NPP administration on suspicion of corruption. The trial of Dr. Asiamah has been on for eight years with no prove of substantial evidence and conviction by any court of competent jurisdiction.

The opposition NPP continues to level unfounded allegations against the new Governor of the central bank in the face of no evidence or adverse findings against him. CDG-GH is asking the opposition NPP to stand by the principle of innocent until proven guilty which is fundamental in the 1992 constitution.

On 30th January 2025, the state dropped charges against Dr. Johnson Asiamah. According to an Internal memorandum sent to the past attorney general Godfred Dame, he was advised to discontinue the prosecution of Dr. Johnson Asiamah since the offence stated have been committed has been resolved by the central bank. Mr. Godfred Dame refused to take the advice and continued the case. The stand-by former attorney Godfred Dame is nothing more than a political decision to witch-hunt Dr. Asiamah.

CDG-GH believes such act by Godfred Dame was only used to intimidate its political opponents which has resulted in the waste of public funds.

Many NPP former appointees and MPs like Hon. Afenyo Markin, and Dr. Gideon Boako's continued call on H.E John Mahama to revoke the new governor’s appointment is without merit. CDG-GH sees their call as mischievous, bad faith and political attack directed to tarnish the hard-earned image of Dr. Johnson Asiamah.

Are the NPP past officials hiding something they think Dr. Johnson Asiamah will expose at the Bank of Ghana? It has emerged that the collapse of banks such as UT and Capital Bank was not caused by DR. Johnson Asiamah but was as a result of former president Akuffo Addo and Bawumia's bad governance. CDG-GH strongly advise NPP’s past officials to do deep introspection of their abysmal performance whilst in government and allow the new government led by President Mahama to reset the economy of the country through Dr. Johnson Asiamah at the central bank. They should stop incessant political attacks on Dr. Johnson Asiamah for him to carry out his duties at the central bank.

CDG-GH fully associate itself with the current Attorney General for the discontinuation of the case in order to save public funds for other developmental projects in Ghana. CDG-GH wishes Dr. Johnson Asiamah well in his new position and should work hard to improve the central bank’s monitoring policies for a better economy.
