When Discipline Fails: My heartbreak as an old student of Accra Academy

Opinion When Discipline Fails: My heartbreak as an old student of Accra Academy
TUE, 11 FEB 2025

As a former student of Accra Academy, a proud Bleoobi of course, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent wave of indiscipline, vandalism, and violence sweeping through our Senior High Schools. The deteriorating state of student conduct has become a pressing concern that we can no longer afford to ignore, particularly when it hits so close to home.

My heart sank when I came across a disturbing video this weekend showing students from my beloved alma mater engaging in an act of bullying that left me questioning how far we've fallen. The footage, which shows a student wielding a cutlass to flog his fellow students as punishment, stands in sharp contrast to the disciplined environment that shaped my own secondary education. During my time at Accra Academy, we underwent strict but constructive disciplinary measures that molded us into responsible individuals. To see such a departure from these values is nothing short of heartbreaking.

While I commend the school's administration for issuing a public statement addressing the incident and identifying the perpetrators, several aspects of their response raise concerning questions. As someone with a background in communications, I appreciate their prompt public acknowledgement, but the details revealed in their statement point to deeper systemic issues that need addressing.

The fact that this incident occurred nearly two weeks before it came to light through social media is particularly troubling. As a former student who experienced the school's once-robust reporting systems, I can't help but wonder: What happened to our internal channels of communication? How did such a serious act of bullying go unreported to management for so long? These questions demand answers if we're to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The school's handling of student information in their statement also raises ethical concerns. As someone who has witnessed the school's previous approach to disciplinary matters, I was surprised by the decision to disclose details about the students involved, particularly given that they're likely minors and even more troubling the victims in the video. I vividly remember how differently these situations were handled during my time there. In fact, during our orientation in 2017, we witnessed something that set the tone for our entire stay at Accra Academy, a senior student (Form Two by then) was brought on stage and publicly punished for extorting money from a fresher. This demonstration sent a powerful message, but it was done without compromising the student's privacy to the public. That single act empowered us as freshers to be bold and assertive throughout our time on campus, a quality I'll always credit Accra Academy for instilling in us. One may argue that because the video surfaced on social media, it may have prompted the disclosure but I digress.

The explanation about the weapon being brought from home rather than obtained from school grounds opens up another can of worms. Having passed through both the north and south gates countless times during my years at Accra Academy, I'm left wondering about the current state of our school's security protocols. How did students manage to bring such a weapon onto campus? Moving forward, What measures are in place to prevent similar security breaches (If the School's narrative is to be believed)?

Based on my experience as a Bleoobi, I believe several immediate actions are necessary to advertise future occurrences.

The school must revitalize its reporting systems to ensure students can safely and confidentially report incidents of bullying or violence. There needs to be a resurrection of the highly effective anti-bullying campaign that was so impactful during my time there. That public disciplinary action I witnessed during orientation wasn't just for show, it was part of a comprehensive approach to maintaining discipline and respect within the school.

To my fellow Bleoobi of the Accra Academy Old Boys' Association, current students, educators, and education authorities - we must act now. The Ghana Education Service needs to comprehensively review its disciplinary guidelines and address the broader issue of indiscipline in our Senior High Schools. The Accra Academy I knew helped shape me into who I am today, instilling values of respect, dignity, and responsibility. It's our collective duty to ensure that current and future students receive the same positive influence that we did. The time for action is now, our schools' legacy and our students' future hang in the balance.
