H.E. Alhaji Said Sinare, National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has praised President John Dramani Mahama for the significant reduction in Hajj fares.
In a press statement released today, February 6, 2025, he described the move as a major relief for Ghanaian Muslims aspiring to embark on the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca.
The former National Vice Chairman of the NDC emphasized that this decision goes beyond policy—it reflects the government’s deep commitment to the welfare of the Muslim community. He highlighted that the initiative aligns with a key promise made during the 2024 campaign, during which he visited over 4,000 Zongo communities to engage with residents and understand their concerns.
"The rising cost of Hajj has made it difficult for many Muslims to fulfill this religious obligation," Sinare stated. "President Mahama's swift action in reducing fares demonstrates his understanding of the socio-economic challenges facing our communities and his dedication to easing their burdens."
He further noted that the fare reduction underscores the government’s pledge to inclusivity, ensuring that all Ghanaian citizens—especially those in Zongo communities—have access to opportunities that support their spiritual and economic well-being. The initiative will enable more devotees to participate in the pilgrimage, fostering unity and strengthening the bonds within the Muslim community.
Alhaji Sinare called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the smooth implementation of the initiative, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience for all pilgrims. He also urged his fellow Muslims to embrace the opportunity with gratitude and maintain a spirit of peace and unity.
Concluding his message, Alhaji Sinare reaffirmed his dedication to advocating for the needs of the Zongo communities and commended President Mahama for fulfilling a promise that will have a lasting impact on many families.
As Ghanaian Muslims prepare for the upcoming pilgrimage, this initiative stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to serving its people, particularly those who face economic challenges.

I was expecting to read some numbers here: what is the actual cost is, and how much has been absorbed by the state ? The writer should have quoted some members to substantiate this important development. Again, the different religious sets also have have things they do to fulfill their religious practices, I suppose the government will not be discriminatory in supporting them too.
