As the Akufo-Addo administration exited office on January 7, 2025, it left behind a parting gift that will haunt Ghana for generations to come: over a hundred surface gold mining permits issued in the final days of its tenure. This egregious act of environmental vandalism is a stark reminder of the administration's shocking disregard for the future of our beloved Motherland.
The consequences of this shortsighted decision will be catastrophic. Surface gold mining has already ravaged many of Ghana's water bodies, leaving communities without access to clean drinking water. The additional permits will only exacerbate this crisis, threatening the very survival of our nation.
But this is not just an environmental issue; it's also an economic one. The long-term costs of environmental degradation far outweigh any short-term gains from gold mining. Ghana's economy will ultimately suffer from the destruction of its natural resources.
Fortunately, there's a viable alternative. Rich gold seams have been identified nationwide, suitable for underground mining. Small-scale gold miners must form partnerships to tap into these underground reserves, eliminating the need for destructive surface mining.
The previous Minerals Commission boss confirmed the existence of these rich gold seams, making it the perfect time to ban surface gold mining altogether. We demand that the new Mahama 2.0 administration takes immediate action to:
1. Revoke all surfance gold mining permits issued by the previous administration.
2. Promote underground mining partnerships among small-scale gold miners.
3. Invest in environmentally friendly technologies and ensure mining companies are held accountable for their environmental impact.
The international community must also support Ghana's efforts to protect its environment and transition to sustainable mining practices.
In conclusion, the Akufo-Addo administration's reckless issuance of surface gold mining permits is a betrayal of the trust placed in them to protect Ghana's future. We must act now to prevent further environmental destruction and ensure our nation's natural resources are used for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
