Barely seven weeks after a decisive defeat meted out to the then ruling party in Ghana (NPP) many well meaning Ghanaians are relieved of a burden introduced by Nana Addo/Bawumia eight (8) year tyrannical rule. The good people of Ghana were bent on punishing the government for its insensitive acts to their cries.
To be fair to the Akufu addo regime in a way, their first four year term was quite good but the second term took off the shine and made life unbearable for everyone in the country. What kind of pegs were clogged into the ears of our leaders? They treated Ghanaians like the biblical Pharaoh did to the Egyptians. The more we cry the more they tightened the ropes. The actions and inactions of these few stiff-necked leaders created a lot of hatred for the party and everyone associated with it.
A once glamorous party like the NPP was reduced to nothing by these self conceited leaders who saw power as the ultimate in life. The massive defeat was not shocking at all. Many Ghanaians anticipated it and it came to pass.
Below are the critical factors that led to the colossal defeat of the inept Nana Addo/Bawumia government;
1. Inflation was one of the Cardinal causes of the regime's poor performance. A government that touted managerial ability and efficiency in the economy run it aground to the extent that inflation experienced unprecedented all time high of 54%
2. Exchange rate, the government of Nana Addo called then Former President Mahama incompetent for managing the exchange rate to 4.2 Ghana cedis to the dollar but poorly managed it to all time high 17 Ghana cedis to the dollar. One wondered how and why government spokespersons tried to defend what was indefensible. It got to a point when their communicators were finding it difficult to appear on the media for discussions. The few who were coerced to do so were found wanting because there was nothing to defend.
3. Nepotism, cronyism, arrogance and all vices became their hallmark. Nana Addo then candidate for the 2016 elections promised not to run family and friends government when his predecessor had only one relative in government in the person of Joyce Bawa Mogtari, fast forward in assumption of office , appointed not only cronies but direct former spouses and daughters into critical state institutions violating the conflict of interest position of our law. The then president was no exception. His acts and inactions took away over a million votes from his party. As if that was not enough they went for a running mate who was more of a liability than an asset. The reference he made of Dr. Kwame nkrumah did more harm than satan's acts to the party (mo Kwame nkrumah no). Oh my word!
4. Another factor that caused anger in the people was the demolishing of Mr. George Oti Bonsu's housing project. How on earth could avowed muslims be so callous to their neighbour in the holy month of Ramadan. May Allah have mercy upon the families of Bawumia and Ramadan. Even if the land belong to you after getting justice from the courts, as human as you are sense of humanity could have sat Mr. Bonsu down and discuss issues dispassionately. This is a Muslim family who are well vexed in the koranic teachings. hell no!.
Last but not the least, Mr Alan Kyeremateng's defection. 'Pride' they say "comes before a fall" The aftermath of the defection of Mr. Kyeremateng was the last straw that destroyed the NPP. After exiting he quickly mobilised his people to form what they called MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE. Yes, the target was change no-matter how it may occur the ultimate was change to strengthen his cause, he invited leading political figures from other party's like Dr Abu Sakara Forster ( former CPP flag bearer) Messrs Henry Haruna Asante and Bala Maikankan of PNC, Odike to mention a few. These people played a significant roles in their own way to totally dismantle the NPP.
The aim of this group was to make sure the NPP goes into opposition and yes, they did. The NPP is licking their wounds in regret but it's over. They are counting the cost of their defeat instead of their arrogance and greed.
