The newly appointed Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has addressed critics questioning his suitability for the role due to his Islamic faith.
Speaking on the matter, Abdul-Salam asserted that at age 53, he is capable of making his own decisions without consulting any Imam.
He emphasized that his family not only supports his elevation to the prestigious position but takes pride in his appointment.
“I don’t need to ask an Imam. I am 53, and I am grown enough to make decisions for myself. My family is happy that their family head has been elevated to a position of respect,” he stated.
Abdul-Salam dismissed claims that his faith disqualifies him from leading the NLA, attributing such criticisms to individuals hired by others who hoped to secure the position themselves.
He stressed that his appointment was based on competence and pledged to perform diligently to help the government succeed.
His appointment, however, has drawn objections from some Islamic leaders. Alhaji Ustaz Ahmed Seidu, Executive Secretary to the Ashanti Regional Chief Imams, cautioned Abdul-Salam to decline the role, referencing Islamic teachings that prohibit gambling.
“According to Islamic teachings, it is haram for a Muslim to gamble; it is against Islamic teachings, it is totally haram.
“The Quran has said that gambling is against our teachings, and you, as a Muslim, if you engage yourself in such activities, then it is something that I cannot understand,” Seidu remarked.
He added, “It would be improper for Abdul-Salam’s family to be sustained through proceeds from lottery operations.”
