Since the creation of the Kassena-Nankana West District in 2008, the distribution of key leadership roles, particularly the District Chief Executive (DCE) position, has been a matter of concern for many in the Chiana-Paga Constituency. The appointments made under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been far from balanced, with the East Zone, despite its consistent loyalty and support, being left out of significant representation in local governance. It's time we address this imbalance.
The West Zone has held the DCE position twice since the district was established.
2009-2012: Hon. Thomas Adda Dalu served as the DCE.
2013-2016: Hon. George Nonterah succeeded him.
The West Zone, therefore, is the only zone to have held the DCE role twice, providing it with the opportunity to represent the president in the district on two separate occasions.
While the North Zone has produced some of the most significant parliamentary figures for the constituency, such as Hon. Abuga Pele and Hon. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, it has not had a chance to appoint the DCE. This is understandable, given the convention that it would be unfair to have both the MP and the DCE from the same zone.
Despite the East Zone's tremendous support for the NDC, it has never had the opportunity to serve as the DCE for the district since its creation. The only time the East Zone had the DCE role was before the district was officially divided and restructured. Under the old Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, the East Zone had a representative in that position, but that was before 2008. Since then, they have been left out, while the other zones have had the chance to lead.
The East Zone has been one of the strongest and most reliable supporters of the NDC. They have consistently delivered massive votes for the party, even in difficult times. This unwavering support deserves to be recognized with a leadership position in the district. It is time the party rewarded their loyalty with an opportunity to serve in a key position such as the DCE.
The West Zone has already benefited from holding the DCE role twice, and the North Zone has had the privilege of holding the MP position. To ensure that no zone is left behind or feels neglected, it is only fair that the East Zone be given the opportunity to lead in this capacity.
The leadership roles within the district should reflect the commitment and contribution of each zone. By appointing a DCE from the East Zone, the NDC would not only correct an ongoing historical imbalance but also demonstrate a commitment to fairness. It is essential that all zones feel they have equal access to opportunities and representation in the governance of their district.
A fair distribution of leadership positions fosters unity and strengthens the bond among the zones. It sends a clear message that no zone is more important than another, and all have an equal stake in the development of the district. Appointing a DCE from the East Zone would bring the district closer together and further solidify the NDC’s base.
As the NDC continues to navigate through the complexities of leadership appointments, it is time to do what is right. The East Zone has earned its chance to serve as the DCE. It is a matter of fairness and respect for the people who have been a backbone for the party.
Let us not allow historical neglect to continue. The East Zone’s time has come, and appointing a DCE from this zone is not just a political decision; it is a moral one. Let us work towards a Chiana-Paga Constituency that is united, inclusive, and fair to all.
