President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to fortifying Ghana’s public health systems to address emerging health challenges, including the potential for pandemics fueled by the escalating climate crisis.
Speaking during his inauguration ceremony at the Black Star Square on January 7, 2025, President Mahama outlined a vision for a resilient healthcare system equipped to protect Ghanaians from global health threats.
In his address, Mahama underscored the link between climate change and public health, cautioning that the worsening climate crisis could lead to the resurgence of dormant viruses and new pandemics.
“With the increase in the climate crisis, there is a likelihood of viruses that have been thought to be extinct for decades beginning to spread and creating another pandemic,” he warned.
He urged the nation not to overlook the devastating impact of past epidemics on families and communities, particularly in neighboring countries, emphasizing the importance of readiness and robust health systems.
“This is a serious challenge. Let us not forget the toll that past epidemics of viruses had on families and communities in our neighboring countries. To that end, my government will work diligently to strengthen our public health systems while monitoring the global health situation. When the next pandemic or epidemic occurs, the loss will be minimal,” Mahama assured.
The President’s remarks highlighted his administration’s priority to address the intersection of climate change and health, ensuring the nation is better prepared for future crises.
