"But Mahama's remarkable return has magically calmed down a nervous populace and injected new vigor of hope into a crestfallen nation."
President-elect, John Mahama could go down into history as the builder of modern Ghana, or risk being consigned to history as the greatest error of our national conscience.
Having suffered two consecutive losses to his nemesis, Akufo-Addo in 2016 and 2020, John Mahama was supposed to be nothing but a memory of failure, a one-term president, an aborted dream, a mirage!
He was publicly flogged for incompetence, smeared head to foot with the label of corruption, vilified, repudiated and broken into several hopeless bits and pieces. Everything pointed to the end of the road for President John Dramani Mahama only a couple of years ago.
But the ways of God defy human calculations, and God's wisdom no one can fathom. Come 2024, and the same John Mahama, older now and wiser too, and looking more sturdy in his gait, stages a political come-back that has the blueprint of the supernatural on it, anyhow you analyse it.
Not only has he obtained the greatest endorsement ever conferred on a candidate in a hotly competitive election in the Fourth Republic. He has turned the map of Ghana's Parliament completely green, from North to South, East to West. The stone the builders rejected has indeed become the chief cornerstone! President Mahama is back!
Of course, the NPP's erratic governance, and the economic hardship they inflicted on us made Mahama look like a saint, all his faults not withstanding. His return is an indication of voter desperation, and want of a credible choice to lead this ravaged country into prosperity.
But Mahama's remarkable return has magically calmed down a nervous populace and injected new vigor of hope into a crestfallen nation.
A president who won't proscribe galamsey for political reasons, who has no idea how to rescue the cedi from total collapse, who
wouldn't sack non-performing ministers, who has lost the battle against corruption, who thrives on family and friends' government, who dissipates millions of tax payer's money in building a fantasy cathedral has clearly lost touch with the people.
Bawumia had no legs to stand on, hard as he tried. So unpopular has Akufo-Addo become that over 1 million supporters of his party in their stronghold refused to vote, effectively betraying their leader and handing him over for crucifixion.
John Mahama now stands on the cusp of making history, if he can rescue the poor from the economic malaise engulfing this nation.
Can John Dramani Mahama be a father for all Ghanaians and put an end to the politics of division that puts state wealth in the hands of party faithfuls to the detriment of the rest of the people?
Can Johh Mahama shepherd this nation with integrity of heart and skilful hands like David and serve God's purpose for Ghana in the next four years?
Will he be merciful to the poor and put them at the heart of all economic policies and considerations as long as he remains the president of this country?
Would he recover the loot of this country's resources with efficient precision and escape the temptation to pay back his enemies in their own coin?
Can he pursue righteousness, and work day and night to create jobs for our hopeless youth?
After four years of his second term in office, what would John Mahama's legacy look and smell like?
The president-elect enjoys tremendous goodwill like no other president before him since Nkrumah. Would he be counted among the greatest economic reformers of our time, or would it be another wild goose chase, another intolerable experience with presidential impunity, malignant corruption and mass economic insecurity?
Would John Mahama carry the sweet aroma of God aroud him and look for creative ways to restore hope in government, belief in politics, and a sense of nationalism which must precede any great economic reform?
Well, time will tell!
