Open Letter To The Electoral Commissioner

Feature Article Open Letter To The Electoral Commissioner
THU, 28 NOV 2024

Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa
Electoral Commissioner

Dear Madam Mensa,

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen regarding the recent directive to restrict media coverage during the upcoming elections. In light of the crucial role that the media plays in ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process, I urge you to reconsider this directive.

The media serves as a watchdog and a source of information for the public, allowing voters to make informed decisions. Restricting coverage not only undermines the principles of democracy but also erodes public trust in the electoral process. Elections should be an opportunity for open dialogue, engagement, and scrutiny from all stakeholders, including the media.

Given the challenges that the Electoral Commission is already facing, I believe that fostering a collaborative relationship with the media will only strengthen the electoral process. It is imperative that we uphold the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and information, particularly during such a pivotal moment in our nation's democratic journey.

I respectfully urge you to withdraw the directive and ensure that media coverage is permitted and encouraged throughout the election period. Our democracy thrives when we have access to diverse perspectives and transparent processes.

Thank you for considering this crucial aspect of our electoral democracy.

Sincerely,

Retired Senior Citizen
Teshie-Nungua
