The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha has issued a formal apology to Professor Ransford Gyampo, a senior lecturer of the political science department at the University of Ghana, Legon, retracting recent defamatory statements he made about the lecturer.
This retraction follows an earlier press release by Salam Mustapha, issued on October 28. In it, he made several allegations against Prof. Gyampo, suggesting that the professor was conniving with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to use the strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to disenfranchise students.
In his initial statement, he claimed that Prof. Gyampo’s alleged actions were motivated by future appointment in an NDC government.
Mustapha further accused Prof. Gyampo of having a bad international image for inappropriate conduct with students, including allegations of sex for grades.
After Prof. Gyampo's legal team threatened a lawsuit, Salam Mustapha has issued a retraction and apology.
In his press statement issued on November 1, Salam Mustapha expressed regret over his unfounded claims, acknowledging that he lacked any evidence to substantiate the serious accusations he had made.
“Lawyers of Prof Gyampo have subsequently engaged me and drawn my attention to the defamatory nature of the contents of my press release. Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him,” Salam Mustapha stated.
He committed to ensuring the retraction received equal coverage by all media outlets that previously published his defamatory statements.
