The People’s National Convention (PNC) is set to take disciplinary action against its Sissala East Constituency Chairman and Secretary for their alleged support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In a press release issued on October 21, the party labeled the declaration of support as “illegal, baseless, null, and void.”
“The perpetrators, especially the Chairman and Secretary for the Sissala East Constituency, shall be hauled before the Disciplinary Committee of the party to answer questions for their misconduct and attempt to mislead the party following,” the statement asserted.
According to the PNC’s General Secretary, Issahaque Awudulai, the purported endorsement is in direct violation of the party’s constitution and procedures.
“It is therefore preposterous, ill-fated, and untenable for anyone or group of persons within the party to unilaterally and arbitrarily commit the party to supporting another party or its candidate without recourse to the leadership,” he said.
Awudulai stressed that the leadership has been focused on a legal battle with the Electoral Commission regarding the disqualification of the PNC’s presidential candidate.
“The leadership of the party has been totally focused on this legal tussle, hoping that justice would be served to pave the way for the party to be represented in the 7th December, 2024 Presidential Elections,” the statement read.
The party clarified that any decision to back another political party’s candidate must come from the National Executive Committee, referencing the 2008 elections when the PNC made such a decision collectively during a runoff between the NDC and NPP.
