The People’s National Convention (PNC) has reacted to reports that some of its Sissala East Constituency executives have declared support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.
In a statement issued on October 21, the party described the declaration as illegal, baseless, and of no consequence.
Issahaque Awudulai, the General Secretary of the PNC, clarified that no official backing had been granted to any candidate from another party, and any such declaration is considered “null, void, and of no effect from the standpoint of the party’s structure and organization.”
The statement emphasized that the leadership of the PNC has been primarily focused on the legal battle against the Electoral Commission regarding the disqualification of its presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
Awudulai condemned the actions of the Sissala East executives involved in the purported declaration, labeling them as undisciplined and disloyal.
“It is preposterous, ill-fated, and untenable for anyone or group of persons within the party to unilaterally and arbitrarily commit the party to supporting another party or its candidate without recourse to the leadership,” the statement read.
The PNC also reiterated that any decision to support a candidate from another political party must be made through the National Executive Committee, as was done during the 2008 presidential elections.
“The perpetrators, especially the Chairman and Secretary for the Sissala East Constituency, shall be hauled before the Disciplinary Committee of the party to answer questions for their misconduct and attempt to mislead the party following,” the statement noted.
The PNC further urged its supporters in Sissala East to disregard the declaration made on October 19, 2024, and remain committed to the party’s goals as they navigate their way into the 2024 elections.
