The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has taken measures to eliminate fraudulent practices in the granting of study leave to teachers in the region to pursue further studies.
The measures have been necessitated by complaints of fraudulent and favoritism associated with the grant of study leave.
The Ghanaian Times newspaper reported that its sources close to the directorate indicated that a three-member committee has been set up by the Regional Director, Mrs. Belinda Serwaa Addo, to investigate issues of fraud and favoritism.
The committee in its fact-finding visits to the KNUST and the Winneba, Kumasi and Asante- Mampong Campuses of the University of Education detected that some of the students were granted study leave through fictitious and fraudulent means.
According to the sources, the students who do not qualify for study leave because they had not served for a specified number of years were granted the leave after paying some monies to some officers of the directorate.
The affected students were said to have paid between ¢2 million and ¢4 million as bribe to some schedule officers.
The sources declined to mention the officers involved in the illicit deals.
