During the recent ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration, Stanley Agbozo, a Volta Region National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team member, made a startling disclosure about significant electoral irregularities that threaten Ghana’s democratic process ahead of the December 7 elections. Addressing the crowd, Agbozo voiced concerns over the operations of the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing the body of systemic failures that could potentially disenfranchise thousands of voters.
Agbozo highlighted key findings from the NDC’s audit of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register (PVR). According to the audit, serious discrepancies have emerged, ranging from illegally added voter transfers to missing voters and untraceable registrations, all of which undermine the integrity of the upcoming election. He revealed that approximately 243,000 voter transfers from 2023 had been duplicated in the 2024 register, raising suspicions of deliberate manipulation to inflate numbers in key constituencies.
Furthermore, Agbozo emphasized the disappearance of 3,957 voters who had been included in the 2023 Final Voter Register but were inexplicably removed from the 2024 PVR. These missing names could lead to a substantial number of voters being disenfranchised. “The EC’s ears are like ‘wele’—too hard for our young democracy,” Agbozo said, echoing the demonstrators’ frustrations about the lack of responsiveness from the EC.
Agbozo also pointed to 15,000 instances where voters could not be traced to any legitimate polling stations, terming them as “ghost voters.” These untraceable registrations, along with the issue of unrecorded voter transfers, further compromise the reliability of the voter register. Over 2,000 voters were transferred to new polling stations without their details being updated, creating confusion and the potential for disenfranchisement on election day.
The NDC Communication Team member did not mince words when he accused the EC of overseeing a “bloated” and corrupted register, calling for an immediate forensic audit. He stated, "We demand proof that the register is robust and free from manipulation. Enough is enough—stop the illegal voter transfers now."
Agbozo concluded his speech by urging the EC to act swiftly to resolve these issues before election day, warning that failure to do so would further erode public trust in the electoral process. He called on all political stakeholders and civil society organizations to join the call for a transparent and thorough audit of the voter register, declaring, "The future of our democracy is at stake."
The demonstrators echoed Agbozo’s sentiments, displaying placards with messages such as “Stop the manipulation of the register and allow for an audit” and “Bring back the missing names. Enough is enough!”. With the stakes so high, the demands for electoral reform and justice are growing louder as the December elections draw near.
