The CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Sulemanu Koney, has warned that Ghana risks losing key investments in its mining sector if it fails to address the ongoing galamsey crisis with serious and sustained efforts.

Speaking on PM Express Business Edition, Koney emphasized that green-conscious international investors may withdraw from large-scale mining companies if the nation does not demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

“The solutions to the galamsey menace are within reach, but we need strong political will and effective collaboration to tackle it.

“We need to be on the ground and make sure what is right is right, and what is wrong is wrong,” Koney noted.

He stressed that small-scale miners should receive proper regulation and technical support as lack of expertise remains the root cause of illegal practices.

Koney urged government and stakeholders to engage in proactive policy enforcement, adding that "investors will pull out if we don't show that we are serious about sustainability."

Despite the challenges, Koney remains optimistic, asserting that with unified effort and commitment, Ghana can overcome the galamsey problem and restore its mining sector's credibility.
