‘Galamseyers are emboldened by political and chieftaincy connections’ — Kennedy Agyapong

Operators of illegal small-scale mining, known locally as Galamsey, are growing stronger in their activities due to protection from high-level political and traditional leaders, according to outspoken Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong.

In an interview with Accra-based Net 2 TV on Monday, September 16, the Assin Central MP said politicians and chiefs being complicit in galamsey is a major reason why efforts to curb the menace have not succeeded.

"The only way we can put an end to the Galamsey menace in this country is if all politicians, regardless of party affiliation; whether NPP, NDC, or any other—come together and declare, 'enough is enough!' But the truth is, many politicians are staying silent on this issue because they themselves are involved," he stated.

The lawmaker alleged that some politicians across the political divide directly benefit from galamsey operations through kickbacks and other means.

This, according to Kennedy Agyapong, provides protection for illegal miners to continue to operate without fear of sanctions.

The one-time NPP flagbearer aspirant believes stronger political will is needed to tackle the problem.

“These illegal miners have no respect for authority because they believe their political connections shield them," he said.

The outspoken politician also called for chiefs to be held accountable, saying "many have a hand in this illegal activity."

"Until we all—politicians, chiefs, and citizens alike; take responsibility and say 'no more,' our water bodies will continue to be destroyed, and our future compromised," Kennedy Agyapong warned.

The conversation regarding illegal mining has heightened in recent times and has seen several calls for the government to declare a state of emergency and a total ban on all forms small scale mining.
