Rise Up, Ghana! Join the Nationwide Demonstrations to Demand Accountability from the Electoral Commission

Feature Article Rise Up, Ghana! Join the Nationwide Demonstrations to Demand Accountability from the Electoral Commission
MON, 16 SEP 2024 2

As Ghana stands on the precipice of the 2024 general elections, a shadow looms over our democracy. A system that was once a beacon of fairness is now shrouded in controversy, secrecy, and incompetence. The Electoral Commission (EC), the body tasked with safeguarding the sanctity of our votes, has instead become a symbol of mistrust, veiled agendas, and blatant inefficiency.

How can we, as citizens of this proud nation, turn a blind eye when the very institution responsible for our democratic process admits, in essence, that it has lost control of the voters register? The EC’s own words betray its incapacity to manage the colossal errors riddling the provisional register. If the Commission itself does not know the full extent of the problem, how can it be trusted to fix it?

A Commission Lost in the Maze of Its Own Making

The EC’s own press conference revealed their dependence on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for information regarding the discrepancies in the register. This reliance alone should be a national scandal. The commission, tasked with managing our elections, is essentially asking a political party to do its work for it.

The NDC, however, is cautious—and rightly so. The infractions they’ve uncovered so far are only the tip of the iceberg. With each passing day, new violations come to light, making it clear that even the EC is unaware of the full scale of its incompetence. It’s no wonder that the NDC is hesitant to hand over its findings when the rot appears to be so deep. How can an institution so lost in its own mess be trusted to clean it up?

The Sinister Silence: Equipment Theft and Concealed Corruption

But perhaps the greatest betrayal lies in what the EC chose to keep from the public. Vital equipment for voter registration and biometric verification was stolen—a critical breach that would impact the credibility of the entire electoral process. Instead of coming forward with this information, the EC buried it, hiding the truth until the NDC dragged it into the light. What else are they hiding?

It is impossible to ignore the implications of such concealment. This is not just incompetence—it reeks of a deliberate agenda to undermine the integrity of the elections. Is the EC’s loyalty truly with the people of Ghana, or have they been compromised by the powers that be? With known affiliates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) sitting on the Commission, how can we, the people, trust that the EC’s actions are not politically motivated?

The High Stakes: A Nation on the Brink

This is not the Ghana we know. Ours is a country built on peaceful transitions of power, on a democratic system that we have worked so hard to uphold. But as we approach December 7th, the stakes have never been higher. Ghanaians are crying out for change, but the government, desperate to hold onto power, is bent on manipulating the system to its advantage.

The tension in the air is palpable. If the EC continues down this path of deception and incompetence, Ghana could face its darkest hour. We cannot afford to allow an election riddled with irregularities to push us toward unrest, division, and chaos. The risk of civil conflict is real, and the EC must be called out before it is too late.

The People’s Call: A Forensic Audit or Bust

This is why the NDC’s call for a forensic audit is not just necessary—it is urgent. The EC’s claim that a forensic audit would add no value is laughable and insulting. How can the very body responsible for these errors be trusted to fix them? It is akin to asking the fox to guard the henhouse. Only an independent, reputable firm can conduct a thorough audit that will reveal the true scope of these violations and ensure that the corrections made are genuine.

This is not just about the NDC or the opposition parties. Every Ghanaian should be demanding accountability. The integrity of our electoral process is at stake, and without a credible audit, we risk losing the very foundation of our democracy. Ghana deserves better. We deserve transparency, fairness, and a register that reflects the true will of the people—not the backdoor dealings of a compromised Commission.

Time to Act: Ghanaians, the Power Is Yours

Ghanaians, it is time to rise. We cannot afford to be silent any longer. The EC must be held accountable for its failures, and the call for a forensic audit must be amplified. The upcoming NDC demonstration on the 17th of September is not just a political move—it is a call to action for every Ghanaian who believes in justice, fairness, and democracy.

We cannot allow this election to be hijacked by incompetence or corruption. The future of our nation depends on it. As tensions rise and the possibility of unrest looms, it is the responsibility of every citizen to demand that the EC do the right thing. If we fail to act, we risk more than just a flawed election—we risk the very soul of our country.

The EC has betrayed our trust. Now it’s time for Ghanaians to reclaim it.

Let the streets echo with our voices, let the halls of power shake with our demands, and let the EC know that we will not rest until a full forensic audit is conducted. This is our country, our democracy, and our future at stake.

Join the nationwide demonstrations across the EC offices. This is the moment to act. Ghana cannot wait.
