Galamsey fight: Apostolic fathers join calls for temporary ban on small-scale mining

The Apostolic Fathers of Ghana, a coalition of prominent Christian leaders, are calling for a temporary ban on small-scale gold mining, better known as galamsey, due to its devastating environmental and social impacts.

Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, Apostle-General Sam Korankye-Ankrah and others, the apostolic fathers expressed "deep concern" over the "alarming escalation" of illegal galamsey operations across Ghana.

They noted research showing how galamsey has led to water pollution, deforestation, and destruction of farmland.

"This illegal activity not only threatens our environment but also undermines the livelihoods and health of countless Ghanaians," reads part of a statement issued on Thursday, September 12.

Unless halted, the Christian leaders warned galamsey "will lead to environmental disaster, food insecurity, and health crises across our beloved nation."

They called on "all politicians, traditional leaders, and foreign nationals involved in this illegal mining practice to immediately stop these harmful activities."

Archbishop Duncan-Williams, who signed on behalf of the group, said "We must show love for our country and our fellow citizens by safeguarding the land that sustains us. If we truly love Ghana, we will not destroy it for selfish gain."

The apostolic fathers commended journalists who have exposed the true extent of environmental damage caused by galamsey.

However, they also criticized others "in positions of influence who have turned a blind eye to this grave issue, driven by selfish interests and personal gain."
